Title A name given to the resource Jhapan Utsav Subject The topic of the resource Jhapan Utsav Description An account of the resource The Jhapan Utsav (or Jhapan mela, as it is also known) is a popular festival that is celebrated in the western part of West Bengal, especially in the Burdwan and Bankura districts, in honour of the serpent deity Manasa. Manasa is considered to be the daughter of Lord Shiva and worshipped as the goddess of snakes and cultivation. The tribes of Bankura and Burdwan celebrate this festival for better rainfall and enhancement of the fertility of their lands. This is celebrated at the time of Shravana Sankranti (mid-August). Some local fairs are organized and snake charmers perform various tricks with snakes to show their respect towards the goddess Manasa.
